Rising like rusted, extraterrestrial giants from the waters of the Thames estuary, the Maunsell Sea Forts stand as some of the most surreal relics of World War II.

Though they look like something out of a sci-fi novel,
these "Iron Sentinels" were born of wartime necessity.
 

Designed by civil engineer Guy Maunsell, these offshore platforms were a desperate and brilliant solution to a looming threat:
German air raids and sea-mining operations targeting London’s vital shipping arteries.
